Combined Chlorine: What It Is and How to Eliminate It

The classic pool smell is combined chlorine, not too much sanitizer. Learn how to measure it, when Pooli flags it over 0.5 ppm, and how shock targets come from your CYA and chlorine ranges.

That sharp "pool smell" after a busy swim season is not too much chlorine. It is usually combined chlorine (chloramines): sanitizer that already reacted with sweat, sunscreen, and urine and is now sitting in the water doing almost nothing useful.

Late summer is when this shows up most. Bather load has been high for months, free chlorine has been working overtime, and a lot of owners cut pump time or skip tests once school starts. Combined chlorine is the leftover. The fix is more free chlorine at a real shock target, not less.

This guide covers how to measure combined chlorine, when Pooli flags it as out of line, how the app sets a temporary shock target from your CYA and chlorine ranges, and how to burn it off without wrecking the next swim.

The chlorine smell paradox

Free chlorine (FC) is the active sanitizer. Combined chlorine (CC) is chlorine that already bonded with nitrogen compounds from swimmers. Those compounds are chloramines.

Chloramines are weak sanitizers. They also cause:

If the water smells like a locker room, you do not have extra chlorine sitting around. You have too little free chlorine relative to the load, and the combined leftover is what you are smelling.

What the three chlorine numbers mean

The math is simple:

CC = TC − FC

If FC is 2.0 ppm and TC is 3.5 ppm, combined chlorine is 1.5 ppm. That is out of line.

Pooli logs FC, TC, and CC on a water test. If you enter FC and TC and skip CC, the app infers combined chlorine as TC minus FC (on chlorine and saltwater pools). If you enter CC directly from a drop kit, ColorQ, or SpinTouch, that value wins.

Range bars show where CC sits against your combined-chlorine max (default 0 to 0.5 ppm). When it is over that max, Pooli raises a high combined chlorine problem instead of treating it like a normal "add a little chlorine" day.

How to measure combined chlorine accurately

Test strips are fast for a daily check, but they are weak at combined chlorine. Many pads are better at total chlorine than at a true FAS-DPD free chlorine number, so a 0.5 ppm CC miss is easy.

Use this split:

Scan a strip in Pooli's Test Strip Scanning tool, or import a drop-kit or pool-store slip with Universal Test Scanning. Pair a ColorQ 2X or SpinTouch and the CC value comes in with the rest of the panel.

You want FC, TC (or CC), and CYA on the same visit. CYA is what sets your normal free-chlorine floor. Without it, a shock target is a guess.

When combined chlorine is out of line

Pooli's default combined-chlorine range is 0 to 0.5 ppm. That matches the usual "treat above 0.5" rule. You can tighten or loosen that max in Change Targets if you want a stricter house rule.

Treat it as a problem when:

Do not wait for the water to turn green. Combined chlorine is an early warning that sanitizer is losing the fight with bather waste.

Water Safety Ratings also factor combined chlorine into whether the water is a good swim. High CC can knock the rating down even when FC still looks "in range" on a strip.

How Pooli sets the shock target

This is the part most "add 10x combined chlorine" charts skip. Pooli splits the job into two numbers:

  1. A temporary shock target (raise free chlorine high enough to break chloramines)
  2. Your normal free chlorine range (where FC should live after the shock, based on CYA and the chlorine targets you actually use)

Temporary shock target

For high combined chlorine, Pooli does not dose you back to 0.5 ppm CC with a tiny chlorine bump. It sets an absolute free-chlorine shock target from your CC reading and your CC max:

Temporary FC target = (combined chlorine × 5) − your CC max

That target is capped at 22 ppm so a huge CC reading cannot ask for an unsafe dump.

Example with the defaults (CC max = 0.5 ppm):

If your current FC is 2.0 ppm and CC is 1.5 ppm, Pooli aims for 7.0 ppm FC, not "add 10 ppm on top of whatever you have." Smart Chemical Dosing Recipes then convert that gap into ounces of the shock product in your inventory for your pool volume.

Normal range after the shock (CYA and your chlorine targets)

The shock number is temporary. Next to it, Pooli shows your normal free chlorine range. That is the band you return to before swimming.

With Adjust for CYA on (the default), that band comes from Pooli's FC/CYA chart for your sanitizer type:

Saltwater pools use a slightly lower FC floor at the same CYA. Mineral, ozone, or UV systems lower it further. If you turned Adjust for CYA off, Pooli uses the custom FC min, max, and preferred target you set in Change Targets instead.

So the recipe is personal in both directions: the shock target comes from this combined-chlorine reading, and the "you're done, you can swim" range comes from your CYA and chlorine targets.

Pooli also treats the FC rise as an expected shock effect, not an adverse warning. Free chlorine is supposed to sit above the normal band for a few hours. Treatment Progress Tracking labels the job Shock in progress until you retest.

How to eliminate combined chlorine

Do this at dusk. Unstabilized chlorine (liquid or cal-hypo) burns off fast in sunlight.

  1. Test first. Log FC, TC or CC, pH, and CYA in Pooli so the shock target is real.
  2. Balance pH if it is high. Chlorine works poorly above about 7.8. Fix pH before you dump shock if you can.
  3. Open the Fix Combined Chlorine recipe. Confirm the temporary FC target and the product (liquid chlorine, cal-hypo, or dichlor).
  4. Add the dose with the pump running. Pre-dissolve cal-hypo in a bucket of pool water. Broadcast liquid around the deep end. Never mix shock with other chemicals in the same bucket.
  5. Run the pump overnight. Combined chlorine does not vanish the minute the granules hit the water.
  6. Retest in the morning. You want CC back under 0.5 ppm (ideally near 0) and FC coming down toward your normal CYA-based range.
  7. Wait to swim until FC is back in that normal range. Post-Dose Wait Guidance shows swim-ready and retest timing after you log the treatment.

If CC is still high the next day, shock again to the new (lower) target. Do not stack a second full bag "just in case" without a fresh test.

Chlorine shock vs non-chlorine shock (MPS)

Chlorine shock (liquid chlorine or cal-hypo) is what actually breaks chloramines. That is breakpoint chlorination. Use it when CC is over 0.5 ppm, after a party, or when the pool smells.

Non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate, MPS) oxidizes leftover organics so chlorine is not wasted on sunscreen and body oil. You can often swim sooner. It does not replace a chlorine shock when combined chlorine is already high, and it does not kill algae.

A practical split after a heavy swim season:

Pick the exact product in inventory. Dichlor shock adds CYA every time you use it, which raises the FC floor you have to maintain. Liquid chlorine and cal-hypo do not. Cal-hypo does add calcium, so watch hardness if you shock often.

Prevention after a busy swim season

Combined chlorine is easier to prevent than to chase.

Once school is back and the pool is quieter, this is a good reset week: test CYA, confirm your FC targets, burn off leftover combined chlorine, and put a reminder on the next heavy-use weekend.

Common mistakes

If you only remember one rule: CC above 0.5 ppm is a shock day, and the target should come from your reading, your CYA, and the chlorine range you actually run. Pooli keeps those three numbers in one recipe so you are not doing the chart math on the equipment pad.
