How to Add Chemicals to a Pool (The Right Order)

Adding pool chemicals in the wrong order can reduce their effectiveness, cause dangerous reactions, or permanently cloud your water. Here's the correct sequence.

Pool chemistry is not just picking the right products. Order, method, and timing decide whether those products work or fight each other. Get the sequence wrong and you can waste chemicals, cloud the water, or set off a reaction you did not mean to start.

This is the generic DIY order that works for most backyard pools: test first, then alkalinity, pH, calcium, stabilizer, and chlorine last.

In Pooli, Test Water now goes straight into dosing. Add Chemicals walks the add order for your readings, so you are not guessing what comes next.

The Golden Rule: Test First

Always test before you add anything. Adding chemicals without numbers is like adjusting a recipe without tasting it. You will often make things worse.

Scan a strip or log a Test Water reading in Pooli. From there you can go straight to Add Chemicals. The Water Report lays out what to add, how much, and in which order.

The Correct Order for Balancing Pool Water

Chemicals interact. Add them in this order, with the pump running, and wait between steps so the water actually mixes.

Step 1: Adjust Total Alkalinity

Alkalinity is the foundation. It buffers pH. If alkalinity is off, pH will not stay where you set it.

Wait: circulate 4 to 6 hours and retest before moving on.

Step 2: Adjust pH

Once alkalinity is stable, adjust pH:

Wait: circulate 2 to 4 hours and retest.

Step 3: Adjust Calcium Hardness

Wait: circulate 2 to 4 hours before other additions.

Step 4: Add Cyanuric Acid (CYA) if Needed

CYA takes the longest to dissolve. If you need to raise it:

Wait: 24 to 48 hours for full dissolution before you trust a test result.

Step 5: Adjust Chlorine

With pH in range (7.4 to 7.6), chlorine works the way it should:

Pooli's Water Report runs this same sequence against your latest test. After you test, Add Chemicals walks each step so you are not stacking products that should wait.

Chemical Safety Rules

Never Mix Chemicals Directly

Mixing concentrated pool chemicals can cause violent reactions, fires, or toxic gas. Always add chemicals to water. Never add water to chemicals, and never combine products in a bucket.

Separate Additions by Time

Wait at least 15 to 30 minutes (pump running) between different chemicals. For shock and algaecide, wait until chlorine drops to 5 ppm or below before adding algaecide.

Pre-Dissolve When Possible

For granular chemicals:

Add Chemicals With the Pump Running

Keep the pump on so chemicals dilute instead of sitting in a hotspot.

Shock at Dusk

UV destroys unstabilized chlorine. Add shock at dusk and run the pump overnight.

When to Add Each Chemical

Chemical Best Time to Add Notes
pH Up/Down Anytime, pump running Wait 2 to 4 hrs before retest
Alkalinity Up Anytime, pump running Wait 4 to 6 hrs
Calcium hardness Anytime, pump running Dissolve in a bucket first
Chlorine (liquid) Evening or morning Not peak sun
Shock (cal-hypo) Dusk Run pump overnight
Algaecide Morning after shocking Wait for chlorine to drop
CYA Anytime, pump running 24 to 48 hrs to fully dissolve
Clarifier Anytime, pump running Keep filter running 24 to 48 hrs

After you log a dose, Pooli's Add Chemicals flow shows wait times for the next product, a retest, or swim-ready, so you are not stacking incompatible chemicals on the same visit.
