How to Shock a Pool Without a Pump Running

Equipment malfunction, power outage, or planned maintenance — sometimes the pump is down. Here's how to safely handle pool chemistry when you can't run the filter.

Why Circulation Matters for Shocking

When you add shock without the pump running, the chemical concentrates in one spot — potentially bleaching vinyl liners, leaving untreated areas, and creating unsafe localized chlorine levels.

Fix the pump first if at all possible. Even running for a few hours at low speed is far better than no circulation.

If You Must Treat Without a Pump

Method 1: Manual Distribution

  1. Pre-dissolve granular shock in a large bucket of pool water (add shock TO water, never water to shock)
  2. Pour dissolved solution slowly while walking around the entire pool perimeter
  3. Use a pool brush or long pole to gently stir the water after addition
  4. Repeat manual stirring every 30 minutes for the first few hours

Method 2: Liquid Chlorine (Better for Still Water)

Liquid chlorine disperses more evenly in still water than granular shock:

  1. Pour slowly while walking the full perimeter
  2. It distributes more naturally without dissolving
  3. Still follow with manual stirring

Minimum Treatment During Extended Pump Outage

Daily:

After Pump Is Repaired

  1. Run filter for 2+ hours before testing
  2. Full chemistry test — scan with Pooli
  3. Add a shock treatment with circulation
  4. Run filter continuously for 12–24 hours
  5. Clean filter — it will be loaded
