How to Fix Cloudy Pool Water Fast

How to Fix Cloudy Pool Water Fast

Cloudy pool water has a few common causes — and most clear up in 24–48 hours once you address the root issue. Here's how to diagnose and fix it.

Why Is My Pool Cloudy?

Cloudy water is always a symptom of an underlying problem. Treating the cloudiness without fixing the cause means it'll come right back.

The four main causes:

Cause What to Look For
Low chlorine / sanitizer Test shows FC below 1 ppm
pH out of range pH above 7.8 or below 7.2
Poor filtration Filter dirty or not running enough hours
High calcium or TDS White haze, especially in hard water areas

Scan your test strip in Pooli's Test Strip Scanning tool. If any reading is off, that's your starting point. For a quick visual check, use Pooli's AI Algae & Cloudiness Scan to photograph the water and get a shock multiplier tailored to your CYA.

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1: Test Everything

Check: Free Chlorine, pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness. Log results in Pooli's Water Report for exact dosing.

Step 2: Balance Chemistry

Adjust in order: Alkalinity, then pH, then sanitizer. Low chlorine is the most common cause of cloudiness.

Step 3: Shock the Pool

If chlorine is low or chloramines are high, shock at night with 1–2 lbs cal-hypo per 10,000 gallons. Log in Pooli and check off Shock Pool.

Step 4: Run Filter Continuously

Run your pump 24 hours until the water clears. For a sand filter, add a cup of D.E. powder to boost its ability to catch fine particles.

Step 5: Backwash When Pressure Rises

Backwash when the pressure gauge reads 8–10 psi above baseline. A clogged filter causes cloudiness, and can't fix it until it's clean.

Quick Fix vs. Real Fix

Pool clarifier binds fine particles together so the filter can catch them. Clears the water in a few hours. But this is cosmetic. If the underlying chemistry is still off, cloudiness returns.

Pool flocculant sinks all particles to the pool floor so you can vacuum them out. More work, but more thorough. Use for stubborn cloudiness or when you need results fast.

After a Pool Party or Heavy Rain

Both spike the organic load and dilute chemistry fast. After either event:

  1. Test water within 24 hours
  2. Adjust chemistry using Pooli's Water Report
  3. Shock if chlorine dipped below 1 ppm
  4. Run filter for 24 hours
